Melanie Blackburn 2013 CSAA City Champion
55 meter Hurdles 5th & 6th grade girls
In the 20 plus years that I have been coaching, Melanie is the most unlikely City Champion that I've ever had. At practice she was very tentative and sometimes afraid of jumping the hurdles. She had average speed at best and at practice her hurdle times were 3rd or 4th best on the team. But on race day (with the adrenaline pumping) she ran with confidence and surprised everyone by easily winning her heat and having the best overall time.
On a side note: On race day Melanie was not listed as being entered in the hurdles. She brought that to my attention and I had to go over to the scorer's table to get it corrected. I had to assure the meet director that I was not bringing in a ringer. ha ha (Thanks Melanie for making me look like a liar).
